PS4 Pro Boost Mode: All there is about it
Sony's PS4 Pro is one hell of a console. While not the first choice for movie lovers, because it does not support Blu-Ray DVDs, the PS4 Pro, offers superb power for games. Packed with top-of-the line specs, it takes gaming to the next level. If you have a 4K TV that supports HDR, then you will be able to experience the true power of this console.
However, not all PlayStation 4 games have been properly patched to utilize the tremendous power of its successor, while some have not even been patched at all. And for that, comes the "Boost Mode".
What is the PS4 Pro Boost Mode?
It is a software update released along with software version 4.50 on all Sony's PlayStation 4 Pro consoles.
The update titled "Boost Mode" delivers an improvement in frame rate and decreases the loading time of several games that have not yet been patched for the PS4 Pro. And for games that are not graphics-limited, the patch will produce a significant improvement in the overall graphics (more on that below).
How to Activate / Deactivate Boost Mode
- Open Main menu and then go to Settings
- Go to System and scroll to Boost Mode option
- Press X to turn Boost Mode on/off
Boost Mode: How Much Does it Actually Effect Games?
Quite a lot to be honest.
The PS4 Pro uses a much powerful CPU and a GPU that is about twice as powerful compared to that of its predecessor. Unpatched titles cause about half of the PlayStation 4 Pro GPU's power to lie inactive.
The Boost Mode however, increases the frame rate of graphics limited games by about 14%. The Boost Mode increases the GPU clock speed when you run these unpatched games, but about half of the Pro GPU's power still remains inactive.
While games that stick to 30 fps won't experience a sudden jump to 60 FPS with the Boost Mode, but the frame rate will be a lot more stable than before for unpatched and badly patched titles.
A notable mention is the game "Project Cars". In certain cases, its frame rate even experienced a superb increase of about 35 to 38%.
The "Mirror's Edge Catalyst" also experiences an appreciable frame rate increase as previously, the game experienced several frame rate dips. Also, the loading time is much less.
While, the Boost Mode will produce a noticeable improvement FPS and loading time in several titles, not all titles will experience the improvement. Below I have listed some of the titles that show an appreciable improvement due to the Boost Mode.
PS4 Pro Boost Mode Compatible Games
The frame rate is now locked to 30 FPS and the graphics look as if it has undergone a major overhaul!
- Assetto Corsa
- Battlefield 4
Despite being quite an old game, I like its upgrade the most. When playing online with 64 players, the frame rate used to experience several dips. But the Boost Mode rectifies that. So, now, you won't experience anymore FPS drops.
- BioShock Infinite Remastered
While the remastered edition has been patched for the PS4 Pro, the Boost Mode sees to that the frame rate does not dip below 60 FPS!
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
While the game is locked at 30 FPS and has not been patched for the PS4 Pro, the Boost Mode improves the loading time quite a lot and also maintains the game at a stable 30 FPS frame rate.
- Yakuza 0
While there are some other games too including WWE 2K16, I shall be adding them soon enough, but these are the top 10.
